Since autumn 1993, that means since about 18 years, FREIES THEATER BOZEN works as the first independent professional theatre company of South Tyrol, the german speaking part of northern Italy, in the field of modern contemporary drama art.

Against the current cultural politics of a post-agrarian society with their traditional conservative patterns and with small financial contributions, the FTB has produced 30 projects of classic, modern and experimental theatre of German, Austrian and World literature.

The classic part of the seasons has been: “Electra” by Sophocles, “Medea” by Euripides, “Hamlet” and “Macbeth” by Shakespeare, “Faust” by Goethe or “Lenz” by Buechner; the modern part has been pieces of Garcia Lorca, Bertolt Brecht, dramatization of Franz Kafkas “Process” and “Amerika” or Robert Musils “Moosbrugger” (from “Man without attitudes”). Experimentals has been plays and texts of Heiner Mueller, Elfriede Jelinek, Peter Handke, Thomas Bernhard a.s.o.

Twelve productions are showed also in some cities of foreign countries, especially in Vienna and Innsbruck (Austria), Hannover and Kiel (Germany), Bratislava (Slovakia), Budapest and Pecs (Hungary), Timisoara and Cluj (Romania – winner of audience´s award with “Lenz” on 1st International Festival of Minority Languages Theatres 2000), Tbilisi (Georgia) and Kerch (Ukraine – winner of main award for best production with “Medea” on 5th International Festival of Antique Theatre 2003). In 2007, the FTB has been guest on the 9th International Theatre Festival “Voices of History” in Vologda/Russia and on the 11th International Theatre Festival “Ancient Greek Drama” in Cyprus (Paphos and Nicosia).

The FTB had held also some workshops for actors trainee and one International Symposion  “Theatre ante portas!” (with experts of 8 European countries). The company is well accepted by the different audiences and has recommendations of some important journals like “The Standard”/Vienna, “Theater der Zeit”/Berlin or “Die Welt”/Hamburg.

The company is led by Gabriele Langes, actress from Merano/Italy with experiences in Vienna, Salzburg and Munich, and Reinhard Auer, director from Vienna, Austrian delegate of International Theatre Institut ITI, who has worked, beside Austria, Germany, Italy and Switzerland, also in Timisoara/Romania and in Shanghai/China.
